Thoughts on Reading Hegel
Twilight Zone: Canadian Masterpiece
For me at least
Hegel is about irony
Where everything you thought before
Turns out true
For a different reason
Than you thought
For example visiting Germany
I was offered a schnapps at breakfast
Which I liked
But never heard of before
Except in World War II movies
And in Marx’s town of Trier
I saw bullet holes in buildings
Left over from the 1930s German civil war
The Hegelian in me wondered
Was Trier the same as Trilogy
God the Father God the Son God the Holy Ghost
Or as the Catholics say
Jesus Mary Joseph
Hegel’s dreaded No. Three
A three-some?
Not at all
In German and French
For Trier often trades places
Between Germany and France
Trier means: to sort, to organize, to categorize
In both languages
It was the outpost of Rome in Germany
The outpost of Rome in Germany
I might be making this up
The Hegelian in Me
The Absolute Mind
It was just the other day
Picking up
Hegel’s Science of Logic
The product of so many arguments in philosophy
Hegel documents as
THE WORD
THE EXTENT OF LANGUAGE
The Lexicon of Reason
Such as without Being
There is nothing
It’s not that I miss you
Becoming
HIS OWN PRETEND HIS OWN
CONCEPT OF PROPERTY
MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL
It hurts to say it
Thoughts on reading Hegel
That I may have gotten it wrong
That it was his mother
He dying in her arms
But she dies first
Just like Alexander Hamilton and his mom
Sometime earlier
Hegel’s dear friend
Friedrich List later “shoots himself”
In the Alps or somewhere
This isn’t my point
It’s just my thoughts on Hegel
Where getting past the Kant
Is hard
And Kant plus Marx
Even harder
Until you finally get to the Promised Land
Kant was Scottish
Marx in the British Museum
Where there is no ideology
No knee-jerk boys
Sure in my time I have explained a few vital paragraphs
In the Logic
Along with Lenin
Not John Lennon
I was amazed at his acuity
Both he and Hegel
At that Library
Berne
The bear
In Switzerland
So I made use of Lenin
In my work
Not as origination or inspiration
These are the times
Said Tom Paine
But as The Word
Sure man I have religion
I have been Christ on the Cross
So many times
I thought I knew the story
It looks like
I’m
Falling in love again
So the point of this poem
Is the other day
Don’t know why
The Science of Logic
Became clear to me
Like difficult paragraphs
Suddenly enlarged
By a microscope
the words sprung out at me
Tyger Tyger Burning Bright
Thank Marshall McLuhan
William Blake
Margaret Atwood’s favo/urite friend
Norrie Frye
Who invented the North American language
All by himself alone
I don’t know where the national and the personal
Begin
Do you?
